LEGO Ideas #007 - Exo Suit Revealed

LEGO ideas has just released the 7th fan selected offering, the Exo Suit, originally submitted by Peter Reid. A video was included along with the reveal. There is also press image that can be found that shows what is assumed to be the box art for the set.

This mechsuit is very cool and looks to have quite a few moving parts. Included are two classes space minifigures, one male and one female. There s also what appears to be a robot turtle.

LEGO Green Arrow by Nicolas “icare” Picot

French LEGO builder, Nicolas “icare” Picot, has constructed one the the coolest LEGO "action figures" I have ever see. I think it's the sheer size and ambition of the articulation that really impresses me. The subject of the build is DC Comics superhero, Green Arrow and he stands at a height of 50cm (just under 20") and has a a whopping 44 points of articulation! His bow and arrow also look stellar. This makes me want to make one of my own.

Knockoff Nation: Superman (Supermen) Minifigures

Welcome to another installment of Knockoff Nation. This is a (semi)regular article on HiddenLevel where I (OgelBlockHead) will review toys that come from the Far East, typically China, that are off-brand versions of more popular brands. In the past this usually indicated poorly made toys; cheap plastic, castings from lousy molds, sloppy paint, mismatched parts, etc., this is no longer always the case. If you know where to look, you can find some really nice toys at a great price.
Today's review is of Lego MiniFigure knock-offs of the various Superman and Superman related characters. There are a few Lego sets that currently include some of these characters, but some have never received the Lego minifigure treatment.  The prices that I have found for this set are fairly reasonable.  I bought them together on Ebay for about $10.  If you look around, you should be able to find it for about the same.  At that price it's less than $1.25 each which is more than reasonable for a minifigure considering the blind packs go for $2.99 to $3.99.  As always, you can usually save by bundling with other figures.
You'll notice some differences between these figures and true Lego MiniFigures. The most obvious deviation is the legs. The feet are beveled on the sides at a 45 degree angle rather than coming to a sharp 90 degree angle. In general, the edges of the the figure are also a little rounder and softer than Lego. Another notable difference is that the capes are made from a different kind of material than Lego's typically stiffer material.
The best thing about this set (other than the low price) is that assortment of characters you can get. Here are the figures typically available in this set:
Classic Superman
Clark Kent
Cyborg Superman
Bizarro
Man of Steel Movie Superman
Man of Steel Movie Black Suit Superman / Kal-El
Man of Steel Movie Jor-El
Man of Steel Movie Kryptonian
The most exciting of these are Bizarro and Cyborg Superman, who are not availble as Lego at all, and Jor-El, who is a hard to come by exclusive.

The printing on all of the figures is crisp and well applied. On many of the figures it even extends to the legs and the backs which isn't always common on minifigures.
Along with the figures, you also get a variety of accessory pieces. Each figure comes with a studded black base with "LELE BLOCK" printed printed on them. They also have two to three green or blue "kryptonite" pieces and some even come with gray cone pieces.
To be perfectly honest, I don't quite like the "feel" of these as much as real Lego or even some of the other knock-offs I've gotten. I think maybe it's a combination of the plastic being a little different  and departure in appearance for the legs. That's not to say I regret getting this set, I'm very happy to have some of these characters in my collection, I just wish they were a little better.

Game of Thrones Lego Minifigures

If you're a fan of Lego and Game of Thrones then Citizen Brick has something your're going to love (and if you're willing to spend a chunk of change, you're going to want to buy).  They have made some custom minifigures of the television versions of the characters from the epic fantasy saga. Citizen Brick doesn't have the license to make official GoT merchandise, but it is very clear as to who each figure is meant to represent. The line is instead given the name Dragon Sword Fighter Force.

Hasbro SDCC Exclusive Transformer Kre-o Set

One of Hasbro's many San Diego Comic Con exclusives will be a set of Transformer Kre-o minifigures, Kerons. The set is called "Class of 1984", although many of the characters they represent debuted after that year. The Kerons appear to be a little more detailed than the ones available in past sets. There are 30 minifigures in all, plus an assortment of accessories.

The set will be available exclusively at Hasbro's SDCC booth for $59.99.

Introducing the LEGO cast of Star Wars: Episode VII

I was a just a couple of months a go when the cast of Star Wars: Episode VII was announce.  Along with the announcement came this black and white photo of the primary cast doing their first script reading together:

Now Lego has recreated that photo in Lego form, to announce that they are gearing up to start designing sets for the new movie.  They took some liberties and put the original cast in some of their costume from the original trilogy. His is the image and what they had to say:

You've met the actors, now meet the Minifigure cast of Star Wars Episode VII!
It is both thrilling and surreal to start building in a couple of weeks, and we look forward to bringing this new world to life, once again (in 1/48 scale)!

Masters of the Universe Lego by Gregos Thomas

This is something that made the rounds on the internet a few months back, but somehow I missed it entirely.  When I came across one of these images yesterday I was completely floored by how completely awesome it is.  The idea of combining to of my favorite toy properties, Lego and Masters of the Universe, nearly made my mind explode. For those of you that haven't seen this before, don't get too excited.  This is not something that is really being made, {BOOO, HISSS} these are custom figures and illustrations made by artist Gregos Thomas. Simply an amazing job.

LEGO MEMORIES by Dan Shearn

From now until Jun 29th at the Hero Complex Gallery in Los Angeles, CA, an exhibit called LEGO MEMORIES (Or A Man-Child's Recollection of the 80's Through Lego) will be on display.  The artist responsible for this work in this show is Dan Shearn. The work itself consists of prints depicting different 80's era pop icons as Lego MiniFigures. Simply put, these pieces are stunning!

LEGO The Simpsons: Tapped Out Sets

The BRICK Works store in Taipei, Taiwan commissioned Alex Jones (Orion Pax) to make some great looking dioramas, base on The Simpsons: Tapped Out video game, out of LEGO.  These displays came out great and really capture the look of the game and the Simpsons in general.

LEGO - How to Build a Master Model Builder

Here is a great InfoGraphic from The LEGOLAND Discovery Centers, that breaks down what it takes to become a Lego Master Model Builder.  It's a great way to inform both children and adults alike, on all the qualities and skills it takes to hone your building abilities.

Lego Bust of Sandman

This Lego bust of Neil Gaiman's Morpheus for the Sandman graphic novels is truly a work of art.  The artist in question goes by the name The Deathly Halliwell on flickr.  The bust itself shows an incredible mastery of brick building. The hair alone is not something you typically see achieved with lego pieces.  Having light-up eyes is just the icing on the cake for this showpiece.

Be sure to check out some of the other lego builds on Halliwell's page.  All the Hellboy pieces are outstanding.

Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham is Coming!

Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham is coming and I can't wait!  The first two were so much fun.  They are some of the few games I can play with both my wife and nephew.  I hope this finally inspires Lego to do a line of Batman blind-pack minifigures of all the various batsuits.

Here are the new poster, trailer, images, and press release:

LEGOLAND Somerville (Boston) Opens in 7 days

I know some of our readers are from all over the world but for those who are in the New England area or for those who are going to visit Boston soon, the new LEGOLAND in Somerville, MA. will be opening next week.

The LEGOLAND Discovery Center is an indoor family attraction good for children ages 3-10, although I'm sure the inner child in us will not care about the age limits.  They are going to have 2 LEGO rides, 4D cinema, a large play area for building whatever your little Lego heart desires.
They're also going to feature a LEGO Builder Academy - where you can learn tips from LEGO Experts, I for one will be listening intently as the best thing I've ever build was a Lego wall.  Since this LEGOLAND is placed in good old iconic Boston, the LEGO Master Builders made some of Boston's iconic buildings, scaled down of course.

Check out more info here and keep a look out for me there, I'll be trying to build a better wall, maybe even a curved one. - Kevshiro

Happy I am your Father's day!

I know it's a little early for Father's Day stuff but Lego is having a Light vs. Dark side celebration.  Upload your favorite Lego Star Wars creation, play their online games, or just like a creation on the site to change the Force-O-Meter to either the Light or Dark side of the force.  The winning side will be announced on Father's Day, June 15th.  On that day, they'll also be revealing a special surprise for you and your own dad to share.

Knockoff Nation: Hulk MiniFigures

Welcome to another installment of Knockoff Nation.  This is a (semi)regular article on HiddenLevel where I (OgelBlockHead) will review toys that come from the Far East, typically China, that are off-brand versions of more popular brands.  In the past this usually indicated poorly made toys; cheap plastic, castings from lousy molds, sloppy paint, mismatched parts, etc., this is no longer always the case.  If you know where to look, you can find some really nice toys at a great price.

Today's review is of Lego knockoffs of the Incredible Hulk(s).  There are a few Lego sets that currently include the green Hulk but not of the gray or the red.  The prices that I have found for this set are fairly reasonable.  I bought them on Ebay for about $5.  If you look around, you should be able to find it for about the same.  At that price it's less than $2 each, which is more than reasonable for a regular sized minifigure, never mind these large figures.  As always, you can usually save by bundling with other figures.
Knockoff on the Left, Lego on the Right

When placed next to a real Lego minifigure, the knockoff (called KO from here on out) figures come pretty close to matching the original.  The Hulk I have is from an Avengers movie set so I am not sure if the ones from other sets have a different face print, but it is a bit different from the KO.  The other difference that I can tell is that the KO is a little shinier than the Lego, not by much, but you can tell by the photos.  Other. than that, I think these 3 figures could pass as Legos.
The  look of the Hulk figures is great.  The scale works well with other characters, depicting them as appropriately larger. The articulation isn't quite as good as the typical minifigure.  There are only joints at the wrists and shoulders.

First up we have the green Hulk.  This figure is of Dr. Robert Bruce Banner's alter ego that he turns into whenever he becomes angry.  He's a really nice shade of green that matches how he is usually portrayed.  These torn pants appear to be khakis as opposed to the typical purple color.

Next up is the Red Hulk or Rulk as he is sometimes referred to.  Unlike the other two Hulks, this character is not Bruce Banner.  This figure is of General Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross.  He is a long time rival of the original Hulk that became his own version of the monster in order to even the playing field. The colors on this figure all match the way he is usually depicted although he is sometimes shown as having gray hair.

Speaking of gray, last up we have the gray Hulk.  This Hulk is usually depicted as a repressed personality of Banner's called Joe Fixit, a Las Vegas enforcer and tough guy.  The transformation is usually triggered at night as opposed to when he is angry.  Although this Hulk would often wear tailored zoot suits, this figure represents the character after an unplanned transformation.  The paint on this one, like the others, is nice and crisp.  It's great that none of the main colors were repeated between any of these figures.
This set, unlike some others, did not include any bases which is fine because the figures stand great on their own.  The only accessories are 3 wrenches which are totally unnecessary, but still nice to have.

I have to say that I was really excited about this set and it didn't disappoint. The not-so-minifigures add a nice variety in size to my collection and they represent characters that I love.  If you do too, I highly suggest seeking them out.
